Both games were played in good spirits with some pupils representing the school for the first time.  All the sides were determined to play attacking rugby and the crowd witnessed lots of fantastic tries combined with some excellent defence.

Many thanks to all the parents for volunteering with lifts and for their support from the touch line, to Standtown PS for hosting the event and a special mention to Mr McKeown for helping coach the sides today.

HPS Footballers SHINE alongside Silverware

Holywood Footballers had their first taste of competitive football today at the annual Ashfield Football Tournament. Holywood fielded 2 teams that competed alongside 22 schools across the Belfast and North Down area in what was a great day out for all involved!

Holywood A’s were in Group C alongside Strandtown B, Victoria Park A, Harding B, Cregagh and Ashfield. The A team finished the Group in 3rd place recording 3 Wins, 1 Draw and 1 Loss and played some wonderful football and scored some great individual and team goals to move on to the next round!

Holywood B’s were in Group A alongside Strandtown A, Harding A, Gilnahirk, Elmgrove B and Leadhill. The B team also finished the Group in 3rd place recording 2 Wins, 1 Draw and 2 Losses and did incredibly well in a very tough group. Some super team work and moments of brilliance led the team to progress through to the knockout stages.

Both teams qualified for the Plate Semi Finals which after 2 draws led both teams to a tense sudden death penalty shootout in which both the A and B team won to progress through to the Plate Final to play eachother!

The Plate Final was a fun filled game played in a good spirit in an all Holwood final. Neither team gave an inch in a tightly contested match that ended as a stale mate to go to yet another penalty shootout. By the narrowest of margins the A team came out on top, but both sets of teams were deserving winners and shared the success together!

A massive congratulations and well done to all involved in what was a joint victory for Holywood PS! A big thank you to all the parent helpers who provided lifts and came along to support. A special mention to Mr Crowe for his willingness to assist and for providing a managerial masterclass throughout the competition for the B Team.

A Team: James, Ethan, Tate, Will, Fraser, Oscar, Luke and Zach (C)

B Team: James R, Tsubasa, Jacob, Harry, Oliver, Peter, Rudy and James C

Run Santa Run!

HPS were feeling festive today in their Christmas hats when they took to the playground to complete the Santa Run with the rest of Northern Ireland for the Daily Mile. As a school we want to continue to celebrate the positive benefits that daily activity can have. Taking part in regular physical activity has lots of benefits for children’s physical health, mental health and wellbeing, and their learning.

Check out some photos of the pupils across P1-P7 in action! We all loved getting outside, getting active and having some festive fun with our friends!

North Down Football Tournament

Holywood Footballers had a great day on Friday competing alongside 16 other schools in the North Down Primary Schools Cup.

Holywood were in Group C alongside Ballyholme, Ballymagee, Bloomfield and Portavogie. Holywood showed great team work throughout the group stages and displayed some moments of magic and great passages of play. They came out on top in their opening game against Ballyholme with a 2-1 victory thanks to two super strikes from both Jamie and Logan but narrowly lost in their remaining games after some hard fought contests.

Holywood remained positive from their performances going into the Quarter Final of the plate where they faced Kilmaine B. After going behind early in the game Holywood fought back to level the match and take the game to a penalty shoot out. After a super save from Patrick in nets - Zac, Isaac and Jamie cooly dispatched each of their kicks in style to see Holywood through to the Semi Finals where they would meet Andrews Memorial.

Unfortunately after a great game and performance from both teams, Andrews Memorial slightly edged past a resolute Holywood team to progress to the Final.

Holywood footballers had an amazing day out showcasing their footballing ability, teamwork and sportsmanship in what was a fantastic day of football fun for all involved. Each player shone and should be very proud of their attitude and application throughout the course of the tournament both on and off the pitch.

TEAM: Patrick, Cally, Zac, Cyrus, Curtis, Luke, Hayden, Isaac, Logan and Jamie

Holywood P.S Rugby Club – Kingspan Festival

The School Rugby Club travelled to the Kingspan Stadium to compete in a mini rugby tournament.  The squad was a mix of mainly P7 boys with a handful of P6 boys stepping up to the challenge. With glorious weather, it only heightened the boy’s excitement to get started. We were in a group with three other primary schools; Greenisland P.S, Gibson P.S and Bushvalley P.S.

Our first opponent was Greenisland P.S. They were a quick side with plenty to offer. We played well in attack but the game was won with the excellent team effort in defence. Strong tackles and excellent rucking help HPS gain possession. Darby and Dylan both managed to power over the line with George scoring a brace.

Game 1 – Full Time Holywood P.S 4 – Greenisland P.S 1

Our second match was against Bushvalley P.S, this game was all about our attack. The dry weather helped as the boys offloaded whenever possible and passed the ball effectively around the pitch.  The boys showed no sign of slowing down and managed to score 4 fantastic tries.  Well done to George, Charlie, Luke and Noah for crossing the line and scoring.

Game 2 – Full Time Holywood P.S 4 – Bushvalley P.S 1

Our final game was against Gibson P.S, they were also unbeaten and a very physical side. As soon as the whistle went the rain started to pour down, this led to more scrums and less fluidity. We defended heroically against a much bigger side but Gibson P.S managed to score once in the first half.  In the second half, we had more possession but the slippery ball made attacking much more challenging.  The boys all played excellently and it was not without effort that we unfortunately didn’t manage to score in this game.

Game 3 – Full Time Holywood P.S 0 – Gibson P.S 1

Many thanks again to all the parents who offered to help with lifts and who came to support and to Ulster Rugby for organising a fantastic event.

HPS Squad - William, Luke, Darby, Daniel, George, Noah, Dylan, Charlie, Ronan, Mathew, James, Jacob, Will, Ben & Zach

NI Cross Country Finals

On Wednesday 22nd January Holywood set off to compete in the Northern Ireland Primary Cross Country Finals at Mallusk Playing Fields in Belfast. After some tough competition in the County Down qualifying rounds before the new year Holywood earned themselves a spot in the finals with a boys team qualifying alongside two individual competitors Isla and Mia in the girls race.

The boys and girls were very excited for what was a fantastic day out. The atmosphere was electric and with so many schools across the country competing the runners were piled up at the starting line. This made it difficult for the Holywood runners to make their way to the start of the pack in the early stages of the race but none the less they pushed themselves all the way to the finish line. The boys and girls did immensely well with the boys team finishing 12th overall across the whole of Northern Ireland and the individual competitors in the girls race recorded excellent times to finish off a great cross country campaign!

Holywood are very proud of all the pupils who competed across P5-P7 in what was a great way to get active with friends and enjoy a healthy dose of competition.

A special well done to the boys team and girl individual finalists for their superb efforts and performances throughout!

Matthew L, Benjamin, Oliver, Matthew L, Reuben, Lucas, Isla and Mia

A big thank you as well to both Mr Lockington and Mr Wright for their help as parent representatives for the school at each of the events. Their continued support has been greatly appreciated!
