Everyone was treated to a very special evening which included P6 & P7 singers, readers, choir members and musicians retelling the Christmas Story.

Thank you again to the guests, Governors, friends and families of HPS who supported our children at the Carol Service.

The H.P.S Rugby Squad travelled to Ravenhill today to play in the Ulster Rugby Primary School Festival. They played some fantastic rugby over 3 games and scored some great tries.

They then got the opportunity to get a tour around the changing rooms and, thanks to Rudy’s dad, they even got to visit the gym.

Many thanks again to all the parent volunteers for helping with transport and for cheering us on throughout the year.

It is a been a pleasure coaching this group of players throughout the year and I hope they all continue to play rugby at their new schools.

End of Season Rugby Friendly

The Holywood Primary School Rugby Squad finished their season with a friendly game against Sullivan Upper Preparatory Department.

It was another great day for rugby and after the short walk along Demesne Road it was time for the match to begin.  After a typical slow start, HPS started to play some excellent rugby. Some brilliant, tactical kicking helped HPS gain so good territory and even a try. The team defended well in a very evenly matched game. With the ball in had the team were prepared to offload the ball, when given the chance, and some direct running lead to several excellent tries. Thank you again to Sullivan for hosting the match and to all the parent helpers for coming along to assist and support.

Final Score Sullivan Prep 5 – 6 Holywood Primary School

Well done to all the players who were involved in HPS rugby this year. With a lot of P6 players in the squad, rugby in Holywood Primary looks in safe hands. A special mention must also go to all the P7 players who were playing their final game for the school, they have all been fantastic and a pleasure to coach over the last two seasons. I really hope they all continue to play rugby as the move on to their new schools.

Rugby Fun in the Sun!

On Thursday afternoon, the HPS rugby squad travelled to East Belfast for a tournament at Strandtown Primary School.  The sun had finally come out which made it ideal conditions to play rugby.

The first game was against a very strong Standtown Primary School. We had already played Strandtown Ps in a friendly earlier in the year and knew to expect a tough opening game. The match was played at a quick pace with both teams playing great attacking rugby.  Final score Strandtown PS 2 – 1 HPS.

The second game was against Ben Madigan, HPS started strong and scored 3 early tries, the team played some excellent rugby keeping the ball alive with superb offloading and passing. The final score Ben Madigan 1– 3 HPS.

The third group game was against Campbell, this was a particularly important match for Will, the HPS rugby captain, as his dad was the Campbell coach. This game was extremely close, Campbell scored 2 quick tries and then managed to defend the HPS attack for the rest of the game.  HPS came very close and were camped on the Campbell try line for much of the match.  Final score Campbell 2 – 0 HPS.

Our final game was against Strandtown Eagles, they were a big side but that didn’t put off the HPS players who tackled well. This was another very close game and both teams matched each other with tries scored. Final score Strandtown Eagles 2 – 2 HPS.

Many thanks again to Mr McKeown for helping with the coaching, to all the parent volunteers (and supporters) and to Strandtown Primary School for hosting a fantastic event.

Many thanks to all the parents for volunteering with lifts and for their support from the touch line, to Standtown PS for hosting the event and a special mention to Mr McKeown for helping coach the sides today.

Holywood P.S Rugby Club – Kingspan Festival

The School Rugby Club travelled to the Kingspan Stadium to compete in a mini rugby tournament.  The squad was a mix of mainly P7 boys with a handful of P6 boys stepping up to the challenge. With glorious weather, it only heightened the boy’s excitement to get started. We were in a group with three other primary schools; Greenisland P.S, Gibson P.S and Bushvalley P.S.

Our first opponent was Greenisland P.S. They were a quick side with plenty to offer. We played well in attack but the game was won with the excellent team effort in defence. Strong tackles and excellent rucking help HPS gain possession. Darby and Dylan both managed to power over the line with George scoring a brace.

Game 1 – Full Time Holywood P.S 4 – Greenisland P.S 1

Our second match was against Bushvalley P.S, this game was all about our attack. The dry weather helped as the boys offloaded whenever possible and passed the ball effectively around the pitch.  The boys showed no sign of slowing down and managed to score 4 fantastic tries.  Well done to George, Charlie, Luke and Noah for crossing the line and scoring.

Game 2 – Full Time Holywood P.S 4 – Bushvalley P.S 1

Our final game was against Gibson P.S, they were also unbeaten and a very physical side. As soon as the whistle went the rain started to pour down, this led to more scrums and less fluidity. We defended heroically against a much bigger side but Gibson P.S managed to score once in the first half.  In the second half, we had more possession but the slippery ball made attacking much more challenging.  The boys all played excellently and it was not without effort that we unfortunately didn’t manage to score in this game.

Game 3 – Full Time Holywood P.S 0 – Gibson P.S 1

Many thanks again to all the parents who offered to help with lifts and who came to support and to Ulster Rugby for organising a fantastic event.
